Asylum is again high on the European agenda. Although the number of asylum seekers arriving in Europe is at its lowest in years, the issue remains explosive, erupting periodically at key EU meetings such as the European Council summit which has just started in Brussels.
A problem is the efficiency of asylum procedures. It would be a sound investment to front-load national asylum systems, so that a proper decision is reached in the first instance, instead of at the second or third appeal. Everyone pays lip-service to the notion that genuine refugees deserve protection. The reality is that Europe's asylum systems do not always afford refugees even the chance to state their claim. There is also much debate about the need for refugees and migrants to be better integrated in their new European homes. I agree. Yet last year's harmonised EU legislation deprives a significant proportion of refugees - mainly those fleeing war or violence - of real integration chances, by allowing individual governments to deny them the right to work.
If European governments can iron out some of these difficulties and harmonise not only their laws but also their practice, they will truly have started to manage rather than simply react to the asylum challenge.

Make asylum fair, not fast.
Just my two cents' worth.

You were my strength when I was weak
You gave me wings and made me fly
You left
Faded like the stars I am

Here I am again. Perhaps I've changed my style of blogging, no more 'philosophical' entries, did anyone notice? haha.

Somehow, my entries always centre around the topics of debate. Yes once again, a portion of this entry will be regarding debate. I must admit that debate has become an integral part of my life. Some say that debate is just plain argumentation, but it ain't true. Debate is arguing with passion, with intelligence. Debate is where you touch words and feel logic. The exhilaration when you win, the sorrows and tears when you are beaten, the words of consolation and encouragement. It may be taxing, the long nights spent on typing and editing speeches, rehearsing speeches, coming up with rebuttal and example sheets. However, debate is not merely paperwork, there are people involved as well. The wonderful coaches, the nice adjudicators, the friendly debaters from other schools. At the end of the day, debate is still THE cca to be in.
I'm proud to say I never once regretted joining debate. (:

On another note, I'm feeling pretty mad with myself. Chinese O Levels is next Monday and I am still online, blogging and chatting away. As you can see, it is indeed difficult to psych myself up and work hard for this highly important exam. So P.S. to anyone who sees me online: please persuade me to get offline and start studying!!
Then again, who reads these boring entries...

the holy light, the miracle-

Preparation for competition may not be fun, in fact, it can be tiring. But participating in a competition gets my adrenaline going, it rocks really. We're into quarter-finals of Charitas Debates 2004! haha. Sakae Sushi is the place for debaters, especially SN Debate.

Very random entry. (:

HELLOOO! Well, well. Today marks the end of exams! And I guess that pretty much explains why I'm online eh. Went out with chenye, val, jen, smark and huis to j8. And we couldn't decide what to eat for a very long time. haha. And a stupid fly resides in long john silvers. I think we attracted a lot of attention, right smark? heh. I think val has got very nice friends who accompany her to buy her grandmother a gift(considering her personality, that is. Still can't believe I said you're thoughtful. HAHA). Yepp so we basically slacked and took very pretty neos! -grins- And upon returning home, I took a bath and went out with my mum to town! I know chenye and val are jealous. =P Couldn't find the mango top and nice skirts lahh. hmmmmm. oh well. Anyway, I'm just quite pleased exams are over, though there's this strange feeling of slacking and not studying. This is very midsummer madness. (:

perhaps the cut was too deep
perhaps the mark you left is still etched
perhaps the heart will surrender
what is decreed must be
and be this so.

Do you feel the stress yet? ahhh. The pressure is getting to my head. But somehow when I sit by my study table and try to really mug, I feel so lazyyy! It's a highly irritating feeling I tell you. Arghh. I think the only highlight of the week is jap oral and discursive essay.
jap oral: 8.7/10
discursive essay: 14/15
And that's all. How pathetic.

sometimes
it's best to be all alone
especially when
no one understands you
just cry
and let it all out
that's what i do.
